Almost in the center of Toulouse have found their place the cradle of the Dominican order, the Monastery of the Jacobites (Ensemble conventuel des Jacobins). This is one of the finest examples of Gothic Languedoc.

The monastery was founded in 1215 by the Spanish monk Dominic de Guzman Garces, better known as St. Dominic. At the turn of the XII and XIII centuries in the Catholic church faces internal crisis caused by the spread of heresy, especially in northern Italy and southern France, contacts with Islam, remnants of paganism, poor catechesis society and ignorance of the Catholic clergy. The official name of the Order of monks were "preachers» (praedicatores); Dominicans are called by the name of its founder. Dominicans have received recognition of the Holy See to become his main tool in the development and wide preaching Catholic doctrine. Order creation initiative in the period of active preaching company owned by a simple monk - Canon of Castile Dominic Guzmán, who was active in one of the centers of the Albigensian heresy - Toulouse bishopric. Apostolic poverty heretical Cathar and Waldensian inspired part of the people respect him. Dominic Guzman considered it necessary to establish a monastic order, which would have the same dignity, and put the responsibility of the monastic poverty Dominican society, which began to form around him. The purpose of the Order of the Dominicans to preach the teachings of the Roman Church. At the meeting, representatives of the Order in Bologna Dominic Guzman proclaimed perfect poverty first law orders and cursed anyone who wants to enter into the order of ownership of movable or immovable property wealth. At this time the Dominican Order had already eighty monasteries. Dominic died in Bologna, August 6, 1221 and was buried in the city. After 12 years, his friend Ugolino, who was then his father and bore the name of Gregory as the IX, ranked him among the saints. Order Emblem depicts a dog that carries the jaws of a burning torch (that, and in tune with the Latin Domini canes, due to the spread of the informal name of the Order of "Dogs of the Lord.") to express the dual purpose of the Order: faithfully guard the faith of the Church from heresy and educate the world preaching the Divine Truth.

In his first view of the monastery was built in just one hundred years between 1230 and 1350, he later expanded several times. Currently, it is a place of pilgrimage to the relics of St. Thomas Aquinas. It is most clearly intertwined history, art and faith.

The basis of the architecture of the complex is the expression of the rules of poverty established by Dominic. Mendicant monastic order to better spread the Word of God broke with the tradition of isolated monasteries in the countryside. He began to build their monasteries in the centre of cities to have direct contact with believers. Their example was followed by other mendicant orders: the Franciscans, Augustinians, Carmelites. Their spires of monasteries give a unique look to Toulouse.

The monastery's main temple from the outside looks austere and massive, but inside it impresses with the ease of vaults, lightness and brightness. Its architecture borrowed from the Gothic art is a complex arches and high Windows. It is composed entirely of brick, almost no pictures. The octagonal bell tower – a fine example of the style called "southern".

Most intriguing in the architecture of the Cathedral – "palm of the Jacobins". Only the Central nave is divided along a number of seven 22-metre high columns, supporting the arch. Underneath the column-beams-rib, reminiscent of palm tree leaves. This column was called "the palm of the Jacobites". Light enters through the large Windows, topped by a round hole in the shape of the eye. The stained-glass Windows restored in the XX century. The bell tower is 45 meters high, was built between 1275 and 1298 years on the North side of the temple.

A true oasis of tranquility looks a cloister (a rectangular courtyard garden, framed by loggias). The cloister played an important role in the life of the monastery. Located in the heart of the complex, it is possible to make the transition from one structure to another. It was intended for strolling monks, for the cultivation of fruit trees, herbs and flowers. Generated by the closed conditions of life and characteristics of the southern climate, Cloitre was devoted to rest and joyous contemplation of nature. They were made in a majestic and somewhat ascetic Romanesque architecture with a touch of lyricism and naive grace. Monumental Church dominates the surrounding buildings. Next, the sunlit flowery garden, surrounded by a deep, full of fresh shade a loggia with semicircular arches on light columns. Their juxtaposition creates a contrast, full of very special and unexpected delights. The cloister symbolizes the garden of Eden Paradise. Its four galleries are covered with a simple beam and 160 are supported by marble columns. Unfortunately two galleries were destroyed by Napoleon's army, now they are restored. It should be noted that the square shape of the garden is present in other religious and philosophical directions – the mandalas of India and Tibet.

In the Hall of the Chapter brothers preachers gathered to discuss current events and outline the prospects for activity. At the beginning of the XIV century at the expense of the rich donor Arnaud Villars, the hall was rebuilt and expanded. hall architecture is simple - two thin columns of gray marble supported by six spans. Large doorways framed doors. Some capitals are the symbols of the four Gospels: the lion, bull, eagle and man.

In 1303 was completed the construction of the refectory. This is one of the largest monastery dining areas of the medieval era. The refectory is a huge hall 55 meters long, 12 meters wide and 15 meters high. Seven of stairs lighted by narrow Windows. With sostonol side of the window was walled up in the seventeenth century during the construction of outbuildings. The walls were previously covered with frescoes, which were destroyed in the earthquake of 1427. In the regular life of the monks refectory was one of the most important places after the temple. The monks took their meals at a long table, settling down with only one hand. In the XIX century the refectory was used as an arena for the horses of Napoleon's army. Was restored in 1865. Currently used as an exhibition room.

Interesting chapel of St. Anthony. The walls, which are covered with murals in the style of "comics" on religious themes. This was important, since most believers at that time could not read. And these paintings served as an additional source of knowledge along with sacred texts read aloud by the monks. Scenes depicted on the walls tell about the life of St. Anthony, his sufferings and miracles they do.

Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapafsas - among the six surviving monasteries of Meteora. The exact time of the monastery's foundation is not known but it is believed that the first ascetics came on this little rock in the XIII century.

He founded the monastery monk Nikanor Anapafsas (Αναπαυσάς - from the Greek "pacifier"). However, it is possible that the epithet Αναπαυσάς (pacifier) is associated with the monastery itself as a place that gives mental and physical rest monks and guests of the monastery.

The rock on which the monastery is very small in size and height. Therefore, all the monastic buildings are placed in tiers, creating the impression of a labyrinth. Visitors to the monastery first climb the 143 steps up the hill to the foot of the cliff, and then overcome another 85 steps carved into the rock.

On the first level there is a chapel of St. Anthony, its altar area of about 4 square meters, so it can take only one priest.
At the second level - the Church of St. Nicholas, which was built in the XVI century, icon painting and decoration for it later fulfilled a prominent artist from Crete - Theophane Strelitzas Bafa.

Church because of the limited size of the scheme is indefinite and is built up across the cliff area. Nave quadrangular, and the main Church has a cruciform shape and is referred to as "compression" type. The most indefinite form is the sanctuary, which is on the east end low arch.
Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapafsas Meteora.
Iconography of the temple contains an inscription on the eastern wall of the nave, the niche, which leads to the main temple. This is the first sign of Theophanes Strelitzasa called buff, also known as Theophane of Crete: "This divine and honorable temple ilk in our holy father Nicholas fully erected Metropolitan kir Larisskim Dionysius, and St. during ieromonaseh kir Nicanor and Exarch Stagonas and fraternity. Painted the same he means unworthy of Cyprian, deacon, the 12th, the month of October, 1527 handed the monk Theophanes of Crete - Strelitzasa ".

In the iconographic decoration of the Church of St. Nicholas used a number of topics, some not found anywhere else in the temple of Meteora. Despite the fact that the painting of the Church produced young Theophanes Strelitzas, nevertheless, observed the extraordinary skill of the artist. Faces of the figures are depicted so precisely that impression of the portrait. This is one of the secrets of art education Theophanes.
It should be noted that in the paintings of the temple features scenes that are not found in any of the churches in the world. This, for example, a scene in which Adam named the animals. Similar themes were known in the Byzantine manuscript miniatures of the XII century, the technique of which Theophanes Strelitzas successfully adapts to a large surface.

The work of Strelitzas in the Church of St. Nicholas in meteor laid the foundations of the "Cretan school", which has found expression in the Orthodox artistic creativity during the Turkish rule.

Hence it can be considered ruined old monastery, the monastery of St. George of Mandalas, which is located on the North side of the rock of the Holy spirit. Climb into the cave, where a skit can only be on the rope. Guides explain that it's tradition every year on St. George's day the young men climb back and in honor of St. hang scarves. There is a belief that the Saint will fulfill the cherished desire of the one who reaches his cave.

Two great ribs of mountain enclose this Eden. One runs from north to south along the western ranges; while from cast to west the dead lands rise sheer to Pantocrator. It is in the shadow of this mountain that we live.

Here little vegetation clings to the rock; water, harsh with the taste of iron and ice cold, runs from the ravines; the olive-trees are stunted and contorted in an effort to maintain a purchase on this crumbling gypsum territory. Their roots, like the muscles of wrestlers, hang from the culverts.

This name "Pantocrator", mountain got not because of his height (just over 900 m), and not because of that her apex dominates the  the island.

Overcoming fear, they climbed to the top and saw the image of Christ Pantocrator, from which emanate rays of light.

Around the temple soon appeared monastic cloister, which flourished for many years. Gradually increased the number of monastic buildings, the latter temple was built in the XIX century. But within each of the builders of the temple buildings carefully preserved the first church, which is stored within its walls the miraculous icon of the Savior.

Came the XX century, and although the Greek Church to avoid the terrible persecutions that struck the Russian Church, many churches and monasteries it was not the best of years. The plight touched Monastery of the Transfiguration on Mount Pantocrator. By the beginning of the XXI century the monastery was home to only one monk, who recently passed away to the Lord. At the end of XX century around the monastery grew antenna radiolocation service in the monastery courtyard built a huge radio tower, which is visible from all over the island. Strong radiation from the antennas made life impossible in the monastery, and today in the monastery did not remain brethren.

However, the story is far from a tragic conclusion. Residents of the island of Corfu have not forgotten about his shrine. The monastery is constantly on duty group of volunteers. This simple inhabitants of the island - students, employees, school teachers. Organizes volunteers priest from the village of Agios Georgios, which is trying at least once a week to make a monastery Divine Liturgy.
And once a year the monastery really comes to life. On the eve of the patronal feast of the Transfiguration Monastery brethren in Paleokastritsa, as well as monks and priests of other monasteries and temples of the island come for a month in a monastery on Mount Pantocrator.
