Два великих горных ребра окружают этот Эдем, писал Ларри Даррелл. Один проходит с севера на юг вдоль западного побережья, в то время как из мёртвых земель на запад отвесно изливается ПАНТОКРАТОР. В тени этой горы мы и живем. 

Two great ribs of mountain enclose this Eden. One runs from north to south along the western ranges; while from cast to west the dead lands rise sheer to Pantocrator. It is in the shadow of this mountain that we live. 

Здесь редкая растительность цепляется за скалы; неприятная ледяная вода со вкусом холодного железа, струится по оврагам; оливковые деревья чахлые и искривленные от усилий, чтобы удержаться на разрушающейся гипсовой земле. Их корни, как мышцы борцов, свисают со скал. 

Here little vegetation clings to the rock; water, harsh with the taste of iron and ice cold, runs from the ravines; the olive-trees are stunted and contorted in an effort to maintain a purchase on this crumbling gypsum territory. Their roots, like the muscles of wrestlers, hang from the culverts. 

Здесь крестьянские девушки отдыхают на склоне холма – вспыхивая цветными пятнами подобно птицам – с цветком в зубах, пока их козы жуют жесткий чертополоха и падуб.

Here the peasant girls lounge on the hillside—flash of colour like a bird —with a flower between their teeth, while their goats munch the tough thistle and ilex.

За два дня до Рождества мы поднялись на головокружительный бесплодный острый хребет Пантократора в монастырь, из которого открывался ничем не прикрытый вид на пролив, ленивый и танцующий в холодной дымке.

Two days before Christmas we climbed the dizzy barren razorback of Pantocratoras to the monastery from which the whole strait lay bare, lazy and dancing in the cold haze. 

Струи ослепительной воды выползали из Бутринто,  и к югу, как жук по тарелке, итальянский пароход толкался на шести узлах к Итаке. Облака скапливались над Албанией, но плоская земля Эпира был морозно-яркой.

Lines of dazzling water crept out from Butrinto, and southward, like a beetle on a plate, the Italian steamer jogged its six knots towards Ithaca. Clouds were massing over Albania, but the flat lands of Epirus were frosty bright. 

В маленькой келье монаха-смотрителя, из окон которого открывалось далекое море, и расплывчатые расплывчатые очертания волн на востоке, мы сидели за столом и принимали дары самого настоящего королевского гостеприимства  - свежие горные грецкие орехи и чистую воду ранней весны, воду, которая была поднята на спинах женщин в каменных сосудах на несколько сотен футов.

 In the little cell of the warden monk, whose windows gave directly upon the distant sea, and the vague rulings of waves to the east, we sat at a deal table and accepted the most royal of hospitalities—fresh mountain walnuts and pure water from the highest spring; water that had been carried up on the backs of women in stone jars for several hundred feet.

Это имя «Пантократор», гора получила не из-за своей высоты (чуть более 900 м), и не из-за того, что ее вершина доминирует над всем островом.

This name "Pantocrator", mountain got not because of his height (just over 900 m), and not because of that her apex dominates the  the island.

Имя Пантократор гора носит  с XIV века, когда пастухи из окрестных деревень (которые и сегодня пасут скот на склонах горы) увидели ночью на вершине яркий свет. 

Name Pantokrator mountain has from the XIV century, when the shepherds from the surrounding villages (which are still graze cattle on the mountain) seen at night on top of a bright light.

Преодолев страх, они поднялись на вершину и увидели там образ Христа-Вседержителя, от которого исходили лучи света.

Overcoming fear, they climbed to the top and saw the image of Christ Pantocrator, from which emanate rays of light. 

Сияние продолжалось несколько дней, не прекращаясь и при солнечном свете. Вскоре благоговейные жители 26 деревень собрались и решили построить на вершине горы храм, в который и поместили чудесным образом обретенную икону. А так как явление иконы произошло в праздник Преображения Господня, престол был тоже освящен в честь Преображения. 

Glow lasted for several days without stopping and in sunlight. Shortly devout residents in 26 villages got together and decided to build a temple on the top of the mountain, which miraculously and placed the icon was found. And as icons phenomenon occurred in the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the throne was also consecrated in honor of the Transfiguration.

Вокруг храма вскоре появилась монашеская обитель, долгие годы процветавшая. Постепенно количество монастырских построек увеличивалось, последний же храм был возведен в XIX веке. Но внутри каждого из храмовых зданий строители бережно сохраняли ту первую церковь, которая хранила в своих стенах чудотворную икону Спасителя.

Around the temple soon appeared monastic cloister, which flourished for many years. Gradually increased the number of monastic buildings, the latter temple was built in the XIX century. But within each of the builders of the temple buildings carefully preserved the first church, which is stored within its walls the miraculous icon of the Savior.

Настал XX век, и, хотя Греческая Церковь избежала тех страшных гонений, которые обрушились на Церковь Русскую, для многих храмов и монастырей это были не самые лучшие годы. Тяжелая участь коснулась и монастыря Преображения Господня на горе Пантократор. К началу XXI века в обители проживал лишь один монах, который не так давно преставился Господу. В конце XX века вокруг монастыря выросли антенны радиолокационной службы, а в самом монастырском дворе возвели огромную радиовышку, которую видно со всего острова. Сильнейшее излучение от антенн сделало жизнь в монастыре невозможной, и сегодня в обители совершенно не осталось братии.

Came the XX century, and although the Greek Church to avoid the terrible persecutions that struck the Russian Church, many churches and monasteries it was not the best of years. The plight touched Monastery of the Transfiguration on Mount Pantocrator. By the beginning of the XXI century the monastery was home to only one monk, who recently passed away to the Lord. At the end of XX century around the monastery grew antenna radiolocation service in the monastery courtyard built a huge radio tower, which is visible from all over the island. Strong radiation from the antennas made life impossible in the monastery, and today in the monastery did not remain brethren.

Впрочем, история далека от трагического завершения. Жители острова Корфу не забыли о своей святыне. В монастыре постоянно дежурят группы волонтеров. Это простые жители острова – студенты, служащие, школьные учителя. Организует волонтеров священник из деревни Агиос Георгиос, который старается хотя бы раз в неделю совершать в монастыре Божественную литургию.

А один раз в год монастырь по-настоящему оживает. Накануне престольного праздника Преображения Господня братия мужского монастыря в Палеокастрице, равно как монахи и священники других обителей и храмов острова приезжают на месяц в монастырь на горе Пантократор.

However, the story is far from a tragic conclusion. Residents of the island of Corfu have not forgotten about his shrine. The monastery is constantly on duty group of volunteers. This simple inhabitants of the island - students, employees, school teachers. Organizes volunteers priest from the village of Agios Georgios, which is trying at least once a week to make a monastery Divine Liturgy.

And once a year the monastery really comes to life. On the eve of the patronal feast of the Transfiguration Monastery brethren in Paleokastritsa, as well as monks and priests of other monasteries and temples of the island come for a month in a monastery on Mount Pantocrator.
