The Heart Of Nice. Travel notes on France.

What associations do you have when you hear the word Nice? I am sure - the azure sea, the promenade - the Promenade des Anges, luxurious mansions.

But the Heart of nice is the old medieval town - Vieux Nice (FR. Le Vieux Nice), consisting of only a few blocks, with picturesque winding streets, old churches, monuments, squares and small shops.

Но Сердце Ниццы – это старый средневековый город - Вье-Нис (фр. Le Vieux Nice), состоящий всего  из нескольких кварталов с живописными извилистыми улочками, старинными храмами, памятниками, площадями и мелкими торговыми лавками. 

In this part of the city do not bring the "organized" tourists, so the streets relatively freely. In Old nice is a clear Italian origin of the city, since most buildings here are built in the style of the Italian Baroque.

Vieux Nice is located around the hill of Le Chateau (also known as the Roman hill in Nice) and the Boulevard Jean Jaurès. In fact, this is the historic center of Nice Chateau Park (Parc de la Colline du Château). It was here that the first buildings were built ancient Nicaea. But the castle, which gave the name of the hill and park have disappeared, but remained splendid views that open from the hill.

Here on this hill arranged impressive waterfall - Cascade Du Casteu.

Its origin Nice obliged the Greeks, who in commemoration of the victory over the Ligurians founded in the mid IVвека BC, the city named Nicea in honor of the goddess of victory, Nike. Over time, Nike became one of the key trading cities on the coast of the Ligurian sea.

Своим происхождением Ницца обязана грекам, которые в ознаменование победы над лигурийцами основали в середине IVвека до н.э. город, названный Никеей в честь богини победы Ники. Со временем Никея стала одним из ключевых торговых городов на побережье Лигурийского моря.

In the VII century, Nice joined the Genoese League, which United the town of the Ligurian coast. In the second half of the IX century the town was plundered and burnt by the Saracens.

In the Middle ages the Kings of France tried to seize nice, but she was able to defend their freedom. In 1388 the city was taken under the protection of the Savoyard County and since then nice up until 1860, was part of the Duchy of Savoy, when she was transferred to France by the Kingdom of Sardinia at Turin the Treaty.

Perhaps the most famous place of the Vieux-Nice - Cours Saleya area (French cours Saleya.). It opens in the morning flower and flea market. Not far from the square is the opera house, designed by architect Francois Laayoune in 1885 on the site of the fire destroyed the theater. To his left is a square of Pierre Gauthier (fr. Place Gautier), became widely known thanks to the palace of the Dukes of Savoy. Now it operates urban prefecture (fr. Palais de Préfecture des Alpes-Maritime). On Place Gautier is the famous chapel of Mercy (fr. Chapelle de Miséricorde), which in 1740 created the project Bernardo Vuitton. It was based "Brotherhood of the black penitents", to help the sick, the poor and homeless.

На Place Gautier находится знаменитая часовня Милосердия (фр. Chapelle de Miséricorde), которую в 1740 году создали по проекту Бернардо Виттоне. В ней базировалось "Братство черных кающихся", помогающее больным, нищим и бездомным.

Just a few meters from the chapel is the Palace of Justice area (fr. What comes to mind when you hear the name of the French town of Grasse? Many did not hesitate for a minute to answer, it is the city - the capital of perfume not only in France but throughout the world. And, of course, you're right. The French city of Grasse became famous for the production of flavors. This is where the events took place in part the famous novel by Patrick Suskind, "Perfume".

The Grass Valley cultivated narcotic narcissus, jasmine, rose sentifolii, lavender, mimosa, orange blossom.

Его окружают бескрайние цветочные плантации, воздух здесь всегда пропитан божественными ароматами: в июне здесь благоухают розовые и лавандовые поля, в марте царит запах мимозы, а ближе к осени – жасмин. В долине Грасс выращивают наркотический нарцисс, жасмин, розу Сентифолию, лаванду, мимозу, цветок апельсина.

The most valuable - rose sentifolii. It was brought by the Saracens from the Crusades in the early Middle Ages in Arabia. It received its name for a large number of terry petals. But this flower is very whimsical and full force reveals itself only in certain parts of the sun. And in Grasse is a few hectares, where it grows Syrian rose. All attempts of breeding it in other areas did not give the desired result - a rose loses its flavor.

Все попытки разведения ее в других областях не давали желаемого результата – роза теряла свой аромат.

Insanely expensive oil of roses - Absolue - a mandatory component of all the best perfumes in the world. In France, it is cultivated only in Grass Valley. But to get the essential oil of this flower is quite difficult: 10 tons of petals required to produce 1 kg of essential oil of Roses Grasse, which is two times more than the usual roses. The synthetic equivalent costs ten times less, that is why he is now often used in perfumery.

Безумно дорогое масло этой розы – АБСОЛЮ – обязательный компонент всей лучшей парфюмерии мира. Во Франции она выращивается только в долине Грасса. Но получить эфирное масло из этого цветка достаточно сложно: для получения  1 килограмма эфирного масла Розы Грасса потребуется  10 тонн лепестков,  что в два раза больше, чем для обычной розы.  Синтетический эквивалент стоит в десять раз меньше, именно поэтому сейчас он зачастую и используется в парфюмерии.
