Happened... I was on one of the most beautiful mountains of Crimea –   Demirji. Right under your feet is the famous Valley of Ghosts, where light, color, shadows, penumbra are constantly on the move and create the illusion of illusory and unreal.

После первого ошеломления увиденным, пришло чувство некоего «дежа вю», возникло ощущение, что я уже был когда-то в подобной ситуации. Прикосновение рук к каменным столбам вызвало вспышку сознания, и память подсказала – греческие Метеоры. Там тоже было ощущение временного переноса и перед глазами проплывали фантастические картины. Вот и опять…

This happened when the human race did not yet exist on Earth. There was no Black Salt Sea, but there was a huge freshwater Novoieksinskoe Sea.

Это произошло, когда рода человеческого ещё не существовало на Земле. Не было и Черного солёного моря, а было громадное пресноводное Новоевксинское море.  

The Titan Kronos killed his father Uranus to consolidate his power made his brothers and sisters, the hecatonchires and the Cyclops, and all their newly created sisters and brothers in Tartarus. Kronos was the exact copy of his father Uranus, he swallowed all his children that came from his sister-wife Rhea. One child Rhea managed to save. It was Zev. With the help of his aunt Matidi, he managed to bring them out of the womb of Kronos swallowed brothers and sisters. He led a revolt of the freed brothers and sisters against the Titans.

Титан Кронос, убивший своего отца Урана, чтобы закрепить свою власть заключил своих братьев и сестёр, гекатонхейров и циклопов и всех своих ново созданных  братьев и сестёр в Тартар. Кронос стал точной копией своего отца Урана, он глотал всех своих детей, которые появлялись от его сестры-жены Реи. Одного ребёнка Реи удалось спасти. Это был Зев. С помощью своей тётки Метиды, ему удалось вывести их утробы Кроноса проглоченных братьев и сестёр. Он и возглавил восстание освобождённых братьев и сестёр против Титанов.

On the expanses of the Thessaly plain over the course of ten years there were continuous battles between two camps of the gods: the Titans and the Olympians. The majestic pillars of Meteora, with varying success, were taken by that and then by the other side. To the aid of Zeus came the Cyclops and the Hecatonchairs and the Titans were defeated; Some of them recognized the new ruler, the rest were overthrown in Tartarus, and the hekatonhaires became their guardians.

На просторах Фессалийской равнины на протяжении десяти лет происходили непрерывные сражения между двумя лагерями богов: Титанов и Олимпийцев. Величественные столбы Метеоры с переменным успехом занимали то та, то другая сторона. На помощь Зевсу пришли циклопы и гекатонхейры и титаны были побеждены; часть из них признала нового владыку, остальные были низвергнуты в Тартар, а гекатонхейры стали их стражами.

There was a lull, but not for long. Gaia, harboring resentment against Zeus, pushed the giants to fight with the Olympic gods. Under the leadership of Eurimedion, settling on the hills of Meteora, they began to throw the sky with huge rocks and burning oaks, trying to destroy the gods of Olympus.

Наступило затишье, но ненадолго. Гея, затаив обиду на Зевса подтолкнула гигантов на борьбу с олимпийскими богами. Под предводительством Эвримедиона, расположившись на холмах Метеоры, они стали забрасывать  небо огромными скалами и горящими дубами, стараясь уничтожить богов Олимпа.

The return blow of the gods did not bring victory - the giants remained alive. Hera, the wife of Zeus, predicted to the gods that they would win only with the help of a mortal; Giants are not vulnerable to the hands of the gods. In this difficult period, Athena attracted Hercules to her side. There were 150 giants, but among them there were only 12 most important and powerful, which were supposed to defeat 12 gods of Olympus: one giant per Olympian god. Thus, the oldest giant named Alkioni was born to overthrow Aida himself, Enceladus was the enemy of Athena, Polybot was born to destroy Poseidon, Mimant - the death of Hephaestus, and Porfirion - as a rival of Zeus.

Ответный удар богов не принёс победы – гиганты оставались живы. Гера, жена Зевса предрекла богам, что они одержат победу только с помощью смертного, т.к. гиганты не уязвимы для рук богов. В этот трудный период Афина привлекла на свою сторону Геракла. Всего гигантов было 150, но среди них было лишь 12 самых главных и могущественных, которые должны были победить 12 богов Олимпа: по одному гиганту на одного бога-олимпийца. Таким образом, самый старший гигант по имени Алкионей был рожден с целью свергнуть самого Аида, Энкелад был врагом Афины, Полибот родился, чтоб уничтожить Посейдона, Мимант — погибель Гефеста, а Порфирион — как соперник Зевса.

And here on the Phlegrean fields a terrible battle broke out, in which the gods, thanks to the help of the Cyclops, the Hecatonchairs and Hercules, won and killed the giants.

И вот на Флегрейских полях разгорелась страшная битва, в которой боги, благодаря помощи циклопов, гекатонхейров и Геракла одержали победу и перебили гигантов.

The main opponent of Poseidon Polobot retreated to the Crimea, hiding on Mount Demirji, but Poseidon, broke through the Bosporus isthmus and into the fresh Novoevsinskoye sea, which surrounded the Crimean peninsula, rushed salty waters, killing all life. Polybot ran, persecuted by Poseidon, to the island of Kos, but Poseidon cut off part of the island - Nisyros - and dropped it on the giant.

Главный противник Посейдона Полибот отступил в Крым, укрывшись на горе Демирджи, но Посейдон, прорвал Босфорский перешеек и в пресное Новоевксинское море, окружавшее крымский полуостров, хлынули солёные воды, убивая все живое. Полибот бежал, преследуемый Посейдоном, на остров Кос, но Посейдон отсёк часть острова — Нисирос -  и сбросил её на гиганта.

Many traces of this battle of the gods with the giants keep the Crimean mountains. The huge stone blocks, which giant Polybot threw into the gods, cover the foot of Demirgi. Lightnings hit the rocks leaving their tracks. The huge stone statue of Gaia collapsed into the abyss. And how to know how many more monsters would appear from the bowels of the earth, if Athens did not happen to be with Gorgon's head, which turned them into stone. Stone sculptures, incredible monsters, fabulous birds and animals, phalos - all this keeps the famous Valley of Ghosts. On the southern extremity there is a rock, similar to its outlines on the female head, although near it resembles the head of the sphinx.

Много следов этой битвы богов с гигантами хранят крымские горы. Огромные каменные глыбы, которые гигант Полибот бросал в богов,  устилают подножие Демирджи. Молнии ударяли в скалы оставляя свои следы. Громадное каменное изваяние Геи рухнуло в пропасть. И как знать, сколько бы ещё чудовищ появилось из недр земли, не случись рядом Афины с головой Горгоны, которая обратила их в камень. Каменные изваяния, невероятные чудовища, сказочные птицы и звери, фалосы — все это хранит знаменитая Долина Приведений. На южной оконечности высится скала, похожая своими очертаниями на женскую голову, хотя вблизи она напоминает скорее голову сфинкса.

So the gods defeated the giants, and Gaia, in a rage, gave birth to the terrifying Typhon, the greatest enemy of the gods and the most terrible of the children of Gaia and Tartarus.

Так боги победили гигантов, а впавшая в ярость Гея родила порождающего ужас Тифона — самого главного противника богов и самого ужасного из детей Геи и Тартара.

And Mount Demirji, or as it was called by the Greeks - Funa - continued to smoke for a long time, until it calmed down, and there was no fire over its top .... But this is a legend from another time ...

А гора Демирджи, или как ее называли греки – Фуна – ещё долго дымилась, пока она не успокоилась, и не стало огня над её вершиной…. Но это легенда из другого времени…

About Elizabeth of Bavaria (Sissi) and her villa on the island of Corfu written a lot, but it seems that no one thought about the reasons for her affection for the island of Corfu. I'll try and make my own contribution to the solution of this mystery.

О Елизавете Баварской (Сисси) и её вилле на острове Корфу написано много, но похоже, что никто не задумывался о причинах её привязанности к острову Корфу. Попробую и я внести свою лепту в разгадку этой тайны.

From childhood, Elizabeth attracted poetry and drawing. She was very pleased to arrange albums with poems (her own composition) with her illustrations. Most of all it was attracted by landscapes. Studies she preferred walks in the fresh air.

С детства Елизавету привлекали поэзия и рисование. Большое удовольствие ей  доставляло оформлять альбомы со стихами (собственного сочинения) своими иллюстрациями. Больше всего её привлекали пейзажи. Учёбе она предпочитала прогулки на свежем воздухе.

On April 24, 1854, the Austrian emperor was married to Elizabeth, who by that time had only reached the age of sixteen. The wedding ceremony took place in the Viennese church of St. Augustine.

24 апреля 1854 австрийский император сочетался браком с Елизаветой, которая к тому времени только достигла шестнадцатилетнего возраста. Обряд венчания проходил в венской церкви Святого Августина.

Very soon after marriage, life at the court, which was strictly regulated, began to weigh on Elizabeth. And in 1860 she insisted on her temporary departure. She wanted to hide somewhere in a remote area, away from social life.

Очень скоро после замужества жизнь при дворе, которая была строго регламентирована, начала тяготить Елизавету. И в 1860 году она настояла на своём временном отъезде. Ей хотелось укрыться где-нибудь в отдалённом районе, подальше от светской жизни.

The choice she stopped at Madeira.

Свой выбор она остановила на Мадейре.

"The world is beautiful, if you avoid people ..." wrote Sissi.

«Мир прекрасен, если избегать людей…»  писала Сисси.

It was on this trip that her first acquaintance with Corfu took place and triggered the incessant series of wanderings in search of happiness.

Именно в эту поездку и состоялось её первое знакомство с Корфу и послужило толчком к непрекращающейся череде скитаний в поисках счастья.

Since 1865 Elizabeth (Sissi) holds at the Viennese court no more than two months a year. She is constantly on the road: continental Europe, Africa, England, Ireland, Madeira. It frightens the very thought of staying in one place for a long time.

Начиная с 1865 года Елизавета (Сисси) проводит при венском дворе не более двух месяцев в год. Она постоянно в дороге: континентальная Европа, Африка, Англия, Ирландия, Мадейра. Её пугает сама мысль надолго остаться на одном месте.

"The goals of the journey are only so desirable that the journey itself lies between them. If they told me that I would come and never leave this place again, it would turn from a heavenly corner to hell for me. "

«Цели путешествия лишь потому желанны, что между ними лежит само путешествие. Если бы мне сказали, что я приеду и никогда больше не покину это место, то оно превратилось бы для меня из райского уголка в ад».

And at the same time, Sissi constantly returns to Corfu, where she eventually builds a villa (palace) in the "Pompeian" style, decorated with sculptures on the theme of Greek mythology. Sculptures are made by the German sculptor Ernst Herter.

И в тоже время Сисси постоянно возвращается на Корфу, где в конце концов строит для себя виллу (дворец) в «помпейском» стиле, декорированную скульптурами на тему греческой мифологии. Скульптуры выполнены немецким скульптором Эрнстом Гертером. 

What was the cause of this love for Corfu?

Что же послужило причиной такой любви к Корфу?

The possible answer to this question is the atmosphere of the island. About its magical properties, Shakespeare wrote in the Tempest.

Возможный ответ на этот вопрос – атмосфера острова. О ее магических свойствах писал Шекспир в «Буре».

One of the magical things in The Tempest is the way the atmosphere of the island is experienced and conveyed by ship­wrecked souls when they come ashore.

Одна из магических вещей в «Буре» - это то, как атмосфера острова ощущается и передаётся душами потерпевшим кораблекрушение, когда они выходят на берег.

The sleep - the enor­mous spell of sleep which the land casts upon them.

Сон - сильное заклинание сна, которое земля бросает на них.

They become dreamers, and somnambulists, a prey to visions and to loves quite outside the ordinary boundaries of their narrow Milanese lives.

Они становятся мечтателями, и лунатиками, добычей видений и любви совсем за пределами обычных границ их узкой Миланской жизни.

This sedative quality, its bewitched disengage­ment from all concern.

Это успокаивающее качество, его околдованное отвлечение от всех забот.

The air around you becomes slowly more and more anaesthetic, more blissful, more impregnated with holy sleep.

Воздух вокруг вас становится все более и более обезболивающим, более блаженным, более пропитанным святым сном.

You will realize that this is exactly what happened to the conquerors who landed here - they fell asleep.

Вы поймёте, что это именно то, что случилось с завоевателями, которые высадились здесь - они заснули.

They fell asleep and the island slipped from their nerveless fingers into the freedom it had always desired.

Freedom to dream.

Everything absurd, everything tragic, and everything gay seems to have happened here.

Всё абсурдное, всё трагичное, и всё беспечное, похоже, произошло здесь.

Sissy was in captivity .... The island got her by her ability to calm and distract from all worries, giving her complete freedom to dream.

Сисси оказалась в плену ….   Остров завлёк её своей способностью к успокоению и отвлечению от всех забот, предоставляя полную свободу мечтать.

What, all so soon asleep! I wish mine eyes

Would, with themselves, shut up my thoughts: I find

They are inclined to do so.

Shortly before his death, Cissy shared with the youngest daughter of his cherished dream - she wanted to be buried on the island of Corfu... But to fulfill this last wish was impossible.

Незадолго до смерти Сисси поделилась с младшей дочерью своей сокровенной мечтой - она хотела бы быть похороненной на острове Корфу... Но исполнить это последнее желание было невозможно...

Today, looking at her palace Achilleion on Corfu, you understand that it is her dream come true. More precisely, not in the palace itself, but in the gardens of Achilleion and surrounding landscapes.

Вот и сегодня, глядя на её дворец  Ахиллеон на Корфу, понимаешь, что в нём воплощена ее мечта. Если говорить точнее – не в самом дворце, а в садах Ахиллеона и окружающих ландшафтах.

The Palace itself is a very accurate description was given by Henry Miller: «Corfu is a typical place of exile. The Kaiser used to make his residence here before he lost his crown. I went through the palace once to see what it was like. All palaces strike me as dreary and lugubrious places, but the Kaiser’s madhouse is about the worst piece of gimcrackery I have ever laid eyes on. It would make an excellent museum for Surrealistic art».

Самому дворцу очень точную характеристику дал Генри Миллер:  «Корфу — типичное место изгнания. Пока кайзера не отрешили от власти, он имел обыкновение останавливаться здесь. Однажды я обошёл принадлежавший ему дворец, чтобы посмотреть, как эти хоромы выглядят. Все дворцы поражают меня своим мрачным, траурным видом, но такого образца извращённой помпезности, как кайзеровский сумасшедший дом, я ещё не видывал. В нем можно было бы устроить отличный музей сюрреалистического искусства».

At the entrance to the gardens Achilleon with a short ladder four statues look at us: Aphrodite and Artemis, Hermes and Apollo.

У входа в сады Ахиллеона с короткой лестницы на нас смотрят четыре статуи: Афродиты и Артемиды, Гермеса и Аполлона.

Passing along the winding path of the garden, we get to the peristyle of the muses, behind which there is a gallery-portico along the wall of which there are busts of ancient sages.

Пройдя по извилистой дорожке сада мы попадаем в перистиль муз, за которой расположена галерея-портик вдоль стены которой установлены бюсты античных мудрецов.

The Central composition of the upper garden was built around the sculpture of Gustav Herter "Wounded Achilles". Dying Achilles with sadness in the eyes, looked at the stunning views of the island.

Центральная композиция верхнего сада была построена вокруг скульптуры Густава Хертера «Раненый Ахилл». Умирающий Ахилл с тоской во взгляде смотрел на потрясающие виды острова.

But the next owner, Wilhelm II, ordered to move the statue of the dying Achilles to another place, where we now see. And in its place established a bronze statue of "Achilles Triumphant", and which is here still.

Но следующий владелец виллы, Вильгельм II, распорядился перенести статую умирающего Ахилла на другое место, где мы сейчас ее и видим. А на её месте установил бронзовую статую «Ахилл Победоносный», которая и стоит здесь до сих пор.

In addition to these sculptures on the territory of the garden, you can see many other statues.

Кроме этих скульптур по территории сада можно увидеть и множество других статуй.

Very modestly and quietly in a shady spot of the garden located Frina. Famous hetaera of ancient times, known in history as the owner of a perfect figure. As a young Frina was the model and mistress of the sculptor Praxiteles, and the later painter Apelles. The sculpture of Frina, in the gardens Achillion belongs to the work of Fritz Heinemann.

Очень скромно и незаметно в тенистом месте сада расположилась Фрина. Знаменитая гетера античности, вошедшая в историю, как обладательница идеальной фигуры. В молодые годы Фрина была натурщицей и любовницей скульптора Праксителя, а позднее – живописца Апеллеса. Скульптура Фрины в садах Ахиллеона принадлежит работе Фритца Хейнеманна.

After walking through the garden, in order to better understand the state of Sissi's soul, which is under the magical charms of the island, look again at the island from the site behind the sculpture "Achilles Triumphant".

После прогулки по саду, чтобы лучше понять состояние души Сисси, находящейся под колдовскими чарами острова, посмотрите ещё раз  на остров с площадки, расположенной за скульптурой «Ахилл Победоносный».

In conclusion, I want to quote the words of the Italian historian Pietro Cairo: "When I looked at the silk smooth surface of the sea framed by simply cypress trees from the balcony of the Palace Achilleion, my heart ached. Ached from the beauty that my eyes saw. And you know what struck me? The fact that Corfu is an amazing way combines Italian richness of nature and the drama of the Greek".

И в заключение хочется привести слова итальянского историка Пьетро Кайро: «Когда я смотрел на шёлковую гладь моря в обрамлении строгих кипарисов с балкона дворца Ахиллеон, у меня заболело сердце. Заболело от красоты, которую видели мои глаза. А знаете, что больше всего поразило меня? То что Корфу удивительным образом сочетает в себе сочность итальянской природы и драматизм греческой».
